ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Celebration Committee Inc is a non-profit membership organization founded to produce the San Francisco Pride Celebration & Parade. SF Pride is dedicated to education, to the commemoration of LGBT heritage and to the celebration of LGBT culture and liberation. A world leader in the Pride movement, SF Pride is also a grant-giving organization through its Community Partners Program. Since 1997, SF Pride has granted over $1.4 million dollars from proceeds of the Pride Celebration and Parade to local non-profit LGBT organizations and those organizations serving the HIV/AIDS and breast cancer communities. The annual budget is approximately $3 million.
This year marked the 39th anniversary of the San Francisco Pride Celebration and Parade. With over 200 parade contingents, 300 exhibitors, and more than a dozen community-run stages and venues, the San Francisco Pride Celebration and Parade is the largest gathering of LGBT people and allies in the nation. This year's theme was "In Order to Form a More Perfect Union…." The event was held over the weekend of June 27 and 28, 2009, with an attendance of 750,000 to 1 million.
SF Pride has a six-person staff (5 FTE and 1 PT), including a Deputy Director, 11 contractors responsible for services such as bookkeeping, and celebration specific services such as parade management, recycling, entertainment, exhibitor relations, donations, IT, and events organizing, an annual estimate of 250 volunteers and 1000 community partners. ABOUT THE POSITION
Recognized internationally as the pre-eminent annual Pride parade and celebration, SF Pride is committed to engaging and addressing the interests of San Francisco’s diverse Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community through on-going programming. SF Pride seeks a visionary and business savvy Executive Director experienced in leading nonprofit organizations in the strategic thinking and capacity building efforts that support efficient operations and sustainability. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in staff and volunteer management, strategic planning, community partnerships, and working with diverse constituencies. He or she must have sound financial management skills, a proven track record in raising funds from individual donors, foundations, corporations, local and federal government agencies, and contract development experience. A background in large-scale events production and advocacy will be a plus. The candidate should be a proven consensus builder and collaborator able to clearly articulate SF Pride’s goals and policies to the public and elected officials. Experience in developing a diverse board of directors, as well as facilitating and negotiating change will be highly valued.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Executive Director oversees the annual production of SF Pride, and is responsible for the overall administration and management of the organization’s programs and personnel. The primary responsibility for fund development also resides with the ED with special attention to diversifying the sources of funding for the SF Pride Celebration and Parade as well as general operations. In addition to overseeing the staff and volunteers the ED also ensures the hiring, managing, and inclusion of the SF Pride contractors. As the main link to stakeholders, the media, the LGBT community, and the general public, the ED must be comfortable interacting with a highly diverse and active community. In consultation with the board of directors, the Executive Director ensures strict adherence to the SF Pride bylaws and oversees the organization’s strategic direction. The Executive Director is the primary contact between SF Pride partner organizations and stakeholders in the civic, philanthropic, and LGBT community, acting as a spokesperson and ambassador in accordance with guidelines set by the governing board.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
SF Pride Production
• Manage and provide strategic direction for all aspects of SF Pride parade production, including staffing, funds and program development, planning and logistics, marketing and media relations, and community partnerships.
• Maintain a respectful and productive relationship with community, civic and business leaders that encourages and facilitates engagement in SF Pride.
• Ensure the SF Pride Celebration and Parade reflects the organization’s vision and mission, while promoting and facilitating participation of the diverse LGBT community as well as the broad community of San Francisco.
Vision and Strategic Development
• Lead in the development of a collective vision rooted in SF Pride’s core values and based on an assessment of the changing conditions that influence the impact, relevancy and sustainability of the organization and the annual celebration.
• In partnership with the board of directors, lead SF Pride through a strategic planning process that determines the strategies and action steps required to pursue the organization’s vision.
• Facilitate the inclusion of the staff, contractors, members and community in the envisioning and strategic planning process.
Fund Development
• Serve as primary fundraiser -- responsible for the execution of fund development strategies, grant writing and cultivating donor, government and corporate sponsor relations for the SF Pride parade and general operations. The ED would also work closely with the Development Associate.
• Work closely with board to develop and implement a funds development plan.
• Significantly diversify funding and expand resources beyond events-based development in a collaborative effort with the board of directors and other stakeholders -- giving special attention to the building of an individual donor base.
Financial and Organizational Management
• Develop and efficiently manage budgets, accounts, billings and overall fiscal management.
• Ensure maintenance of official records of SF Pride activities and meetings, and file quarterly reports to the board.
Board Development
• Work closely with board of directors to increase access to resources by diversifying and expanding board composition to include more community, business, and philanthropic leaders.
• Partner with board chair to provide board members with the resources and knowledge they need to effectively and professionally carry out their role and responsibilities.
• Provide board with timely and accurate reports to keep them informed of SF Pride’s operations, fiscal health, and organizational relationships.
• Working in concert with the board president, create and maintain effective and appropriate line of communications and serve as primary liaison between staff, contractors, volunteers, members and board.
Staff, Volunteers, Members and Contractors Management
• Recruit and supervise staff, volunteers and contractors. Appropriately prioritize and delegate work assignments.
• Maintain organizational culture and practices that promote a balanced work/life style and a motivating environment.
• Ensure training and professional development of staff and volunteers, as well as adherence to SF Pride human resource policies.
• Work closely with Deputy Director and staff to set conditions and implement practices that are conducive to staff retention.
Community Engagement and Advocacy
• Serve as a spokesperson and consensus builder for SF Pride.
• In the context of vision and mission play a visible and active role in the LGBT community and use the SF Pride platform to advocate the issues that concern that community.
• Raise the public profile of SF Pride’s on-going community activities and programming.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• A minimum of three years experience as an Executive Director of a non-profit organization.
• Demonstrated ability to engage and work in a wide-range of social settings.
• Experience leading, building, and working effectively with a diverse board of directors.
• Demonstrated ability to build bridges and partnerships.
• Knowledge of issues related to the LGBT community.
• Experience working with the LGBT community as well as communities of color and diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
• Demonstrated ability to articulate a compelling vision.
• Successful track record in fundraising from foundations, corporations, local and federal government agencies, and individual donors.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent business and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated diplomatic and people skills.
• Ability to work independently and in teams.
• Proficiency in computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, database, desktop publishing and Internet applications.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Large-scale events production and management experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to advocacy of LGBT rights is a plus.
